Book Reviews: The Fairytale Retellings by Jackson Pearce

Sisters Red (Fairytale Retellings, #1)Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The tale of Scarlett and her sister Rosie, the two Red Riding Hoods and the visit from the big bad wolf. When the big bad wolf comes and terrorises the little girls and their grandma leaving Scarlett scarred and their grandmother dead the girls swear to hunt the wolves known as Fenris for the rest of their lives.
Scarlett is over protective and treats Rosie like a child, unfortunately they are both still children.
An interesting twist on the old Red Riding Hood tale. Filled with a lovely and awkward romance, sisterly love, guilt and duty Sisters Red is a rollercoaster ride that I found hard to put down.

Sweetly (Fairytale Retellings, #2)Sweetly by Jackson Pearce
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A brilliant retelling of the Hansel and Gretel story, woven into this strange world set up in Sisters Red. Ansel and Gretchen survived the witches attack man years ago, but Gretchen's twin didn't which breaks their family until they are left with their step-mother who doesn't want them and throws them out. This is where the story begins.
Gretchen is a capable but trusting young woman who stands up with Rosie and Scarlett of the first book in impressive lead characters.
The ending perfectly sets up the next book, though I had wanted to not read past this book as they have changed the cover art so it doesn't match the first two books, I am keen to learn what happens next.

Book Review: Anya's Ghost

Anya's GhostAnya's Ghost by Vera Brosgol
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Anya, a nervous teenage Russian immigrant just wants to fit in at her 3rd worst private school. After falling down a well she finds herself with a new best friend, a ghost.
A cute book about self respect and self acceptance, the art is amazing and the lack of colour doesn't detract from the story at all.

Book Review: The Fault in Our Stars

The Fault in Our StarsThe Fault in Our Stars by John Green
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A very sweet story about love between two teens that have had to grow up due to contracting cancer. Two very different people brought together at a support group of all places and dealing with their feelings and diagnosis.
At times these teens seem pompous, spilling forth a large vocabulary and memorised sonnets, while the adults act like children barely using three syllable words.
Looking past this though the story is both touching and bitter sweet, although a little misogynist and pretentious.

I wasn't as impressed with this book as I had hoped. Everyone hyped it so much, but perhaps that is what dragged it down for me. I was hoping/expecting something fantastic that hadn't been done before in indie movies, but it just didn't happen for me.

Partially I blame the fact that I don't watch a lot of Hollywood movies that are all happy endings, perhaps if I did this would have been more of a shock. Don't get me wrong there were tears, but they weren't streaming. I guess loosing 3 close relatives already to cancer also didn't help, been there done that and you're not even someone I know kinda thing.

Goodreads doesn't give you the option of half stars or this would probably be more of a 3.5 stars rating. Either way I doubt I would pick this book up again, but at least I can see why other people would.

Book Review: Interview With The Vampire, Claudia's Story

Interview with the Vampire: Claudia's StoryInterview with the Vampire: Claudia's Story by Ashley Marie Witter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Claudia's story was always a sad story of eternal frustration. A Child vampire, never able to grow to the adult her mind became. Specially devious and cruel intelligence, it's really no surprise her bitterness over her child's body grew to the point it did.
Claudia's story shows us the same story we read/saw in Interview with a vampire but from the perspective of Lestat and Louis's vampire doll child.
