Book Review; Book Club; My Life as a White Trash Zombie

My Life As a White Trash Zombie (White Trash Zombie, #1)My Life As a White Trash Zombie by Diana Rowland
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I loved this book!
I read the entire thing on the plane flying interstate and am really glad I took it as there was no point in which I wanted to put it down.
The domestic subject matter was handled really well and the epiphany Angel has about what 'looser' really means was brilliant.
Now the zombie bits, I found this an interesting take on the zombie myths and thought it was really thought out and explained well. The brain cravings were detailed and you really could understand how a zombie could go 'rogue'.
Angel came leaps and bounds in the book and really picked herself up, even if she had to die to find the motivation. Her confidence and self belief grow much slower and I can understand why.
Friendships are built up and this could easily be about a 'white trash' girl getting herself out of the gutter without the zombie bits and it would still be a good read. The zombie parts definatley add to it.
Though tagged as a young adult book, I found it really easy to forget that it was and just enjoy the story.

Quick Shopping Post!

Went to DFO for a little bit with the man, and picked up a couple of things.
I had gone to get the bag only for a steampunk remake, but 3 pairs of sunglasses for $1 each was just too good to walk away from
 I LOVE Gargoyles!
Isn't she just darling
I want to give her a hair cut though, give her a bobcut instead
Online: finally succumbed to buying some post stockings
I got the peacock feather in gray
And the flock of bats on pale
So many designs to choose from.
Put in a huge halloween candy order with CandyCrate.com

Lastly but definatley not least I bought this amazing little ceramic skull from Dan Stocks on Etsy.
It stinks a bit but I gave it a good wash and its ready for the Curio cabnet.

SupaNova : BrisNova 2012

I was lucky enough to get time off of work this year to head to Supanova in Brisbane on
November 9th-12th
I had a blast.
 Michelle Pfieffer Cat Woman
 Blue - Master Chief
 Catwoman and Batman
The cutest little Jawa I ever did see
(Yes, I know what a Jawa is!!)
 A box of crayons
(well i thought it was rather clever)
 Tom Hopper from Merlin

If you don't know what this guy is then you really don't care anyway
I got Spike's autograph. He was really nice and chatty and shook everyones hand
(A girl I met on my way out of the line nearly fainted when I told her that)
Had to have my photo taken with Elvira
A heap of the people in the Vaginal Fantasy book club rocked up to SupaNova and we had a bit meet up. Its an online bookclub so people came from all over the country.
The founder of the bookclub Felicia Day was there for Supanova and met with us aswell.
Borrowed some of Jess's photos :-)

The Crystal Head Vodka

By no means was this cheap, but its a lovely vodka!
Did I taste enough of a difference to pay the extra dosh?
Hell no!
I paid for the skull bottle, which goes well with a gothic or steampunk kitchen
I shot it the first time around and its a warmer alright, went down well and still a pretty good vodka

Steampunk Repaint -

So this is my steampunk repaint of the 80's Keyper toy.
Cute aint she?
Available in store

This is what she looked like when I got her.

Book Club Review: Dearly Departed

Dearly, DepartedDearly, Departed by Lia Habel
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It took me forever to finish this!
For a zombie book it was rather boring. Ms Dearly is a spoilt brat, and how many time did she faint?? Bram was kinda nice for a dead guy, really sweet in his love for her. Pam kinda got kick arse, though timid in the start of the story clearly extreme situations bring out the best in some people.
This book was boring but was clearly setting up the series and more than likely gets much better in the next few books. I doubt the events in the series will make sense without reading this one, so if you are into 'zombie love' then this is probably going to be a great series.
There are clearly some very serious racial issues explored in the book, using the New Victorians vs the Punks then the Living vs the Dead to get the points across.
This also didn't really read as a steampunk as the 'punks' seemed the only ones with steam-technology.

Stemapunk Gun : Before , After and After and After

The toy gun I bought, it was $1.50 from Sams Warehouse
and batteries WERE included

Steampunk Alchemist Gun

So I am working on this gun, for my steampunk outfit.
I'm going to go for an Alchemist look
Its still not finished. Need to add a little more to it to make it right.
I'm going more silver and black steampunk than bronze and white.
Though as you can see I have added some gold and bronze.
The steampunk dragon caduceus is the same as the patch I got for my steampunk bag
(though it occurs to me I probably haven't yet blogged about the bag.)
Anyways it's a match
Its a light and sounds gun so the two white balls light up all red and blue but I want to still put a few coats of glow-in-the-dark on the balls for when the guns lights stop working.
The semi-pointed tip is also glow-in-the-dark.
These were originally highlighters from some medical company when I was working as a medical receptionist.
I have glued the tips inside them shut so hopefully that will prevent loss of the ink.
The ink is contained inside another tube so they look pretty cool and I've wanted to do something like this with them.
So I have attached two of the lids to the top of the gun and this will act as the loading device.
Then the 4 capsules are interchangable

Book Review: Riveted (Iron Seas #3)

Riveted (Iron Seas, #3)Riveted by Meljean Brook
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Oh I really loved this one. The ending made me cry and the action left nothing wanting. Annika is marvelous innocent but no social concience to tell her what not to say and a really unique style. Small yet able. And David - WOW a real steampunk man with alterations, though neccassary its nice to have one of these guys as a lead. There is a 'MINE' moment but David doesn't seem to actually want to own Annika which makes a wonderful change.
Can't wait for the next book to come out.

This book can be read without reading either of the other books as these characters are completely seperate from Yasmeen and the Iron Duke.

Book Review: 11 Scandals - Last book in series.

Eleven Scandals to Start to Win a Duke's Heart (Love By Numbers, #3)Eleven Scandals to Start to Win a Duke's Heart by Sarah MacLean
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I loved book one, book two was very nearly as exciting and this book certainly followed through with the entertainment. However I just couldn't figure out why she would ever want to be attached to Simon. Duke of disdain is an excellent name for him.
I do however love that all the characters came back from the previous two books and had rather large parts in Julianna's life since she was a very big part of theirs. Though I found it annoying that after everything her brothers and in-laws did and complete acceptance of her she still couldn't let them in.
Outwardly she seemed as strong as the other women in the series but her thoughts betrayed her as the complete opposite.
It was also dissapointing the see the was Callie has turned out, opting for a 'smart match' for Julianna, I really had hoped she would have understood after everything she did in book one.
A great series however and I am glad that I read all three books. Definatley a series you must read in order though.

Book Review : Heart of Steel - Book 2 Following The Iron Duke.

Heart of Steel (Iron Seas, #2)Heart of Steel by Meljean Brook
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

How refreshing to have an actual kickass female lead who takes the lead and a leading man suitable that doesn't change who she is.
Yasmeen is a sky captain and a very good one, she also has some secrets. When the man that she threw off her airship and into a pack of zombies (in Iron Duke - book 1) returns from the dead to reclaim his find and intent on falling in love with her things start off a little bumpy. While still not impressed by some of his methods Archimedes Fox never steps over that line and gives Yasmeen every reason to love him in return. As they travel together under the guise of marriage intent on justice a mutual respect grows into love.
I love this world that Meljean has created, and I love these characters a lot. Unlike the Iron Duke I never hated Archimedes and Unlike Mina Wentworth I never thought Yasmeen was an idiot of biblical porportions.
The slave bracelet came close to crossing a line but not only did Archimedes not cross that line he was well aware of the line and his limits so as to not cross it.
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this book!

Book Club Book Review: Poison Study

Poison Study (Study, #1)Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An amazing story about a girl sentanced to death for killing a man who's father took her in off the street and clothed and fed her.
In a world where there are no excuses to crimes and punishment is set in stone Yelena is offered an oppurtunity for life, a life where she is constatly in danger of dying.
People are not what they seem and its hard to know who you can trust so is it worth it?
I was pulled into Yelenas story and followed her journey through her training and discoveries and found this book very hard to put down.
Yelena is a mere girl when a torturous life forces her to commit the sin of murder. The book opens with Yelena in the dungeon, she's been there almost a year. She is to hang for her crimes and confesses, she did kill him. Now comes an incredible choice, face the gallows and die now or take a job as the Commanders food tester, never sure when you may die from an assasination attempt. Yelena has more than just poisons to worry about though as the father of the man she killed tries to have her killed and with more enemies then friends, its very hard for Yelena to know who to trust and there is a reason since everyone seems keen on ending her life.

Book Review: Iron Duke

The Iron Duke (Iron Seas, #1)The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

The world building and history is amazing! The author leaves you with no doubt this is a steampunk book. The people are interesting and the modifications are astounding. The female lead, Mina, is great! Dealing with horrors, racism and coming out the other end victorious. The male lead, Rhys, however leaves a LOT to be desired. He is a product of his horrific childhood, however he doesn't grow or learn anything though towards the end when he makes a hard decision he had me fooled into thinking he wasn't such a bad guy. If I had not read the last chapter I would have rated the book 4 stars but to my horror I did read the last chapter and it left a bitter taste in my mouth, forcing me to reduce my rating to 2 stars.

Book Clud Review: Book 2 September

Eternal Pleasure (Gods of the Night, #1)Eternal Pleasure by Nina Bangs

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a book that is so bad it is good. I was laughing the whole way through, ever though I suppose some of it wasn't really meant to be laughed at.
This is a feel good book despite the bad stuff that is going on and the reactions of the Dinosaur souls is refreshing.
While this book does contain Vampires and Werewolves they are not the main creatures of the night and mearly add to the storyline without dominating so if you are looking for something different or are just feeling saturated with vampire stories this is a must to read.
